Story Programs :

What is special about In the Spirit?
We will create a program of stories designed specifically for your audience. For each event, we select material from our repertoire or create new stories to capture the spirit of the occasion.

We have created programs for Cultural Connections, Juneteenth, Earth Day, Naming Ceremonies, Homegoings, Assemblies, Festivals, Black History Month, Women’s History, Community Celebrations, Reading Nights and more.

Brief Bio :

Almost twenty years ago, Emily Hooper Lansana and Glenda Zahra Baker came together to form Performance Duo: In the Spirit. They have developed an extensive repertoire of stories that carry us on enthralling journeys. Each performance celebrates the power of the word to connect, uplift and transform.

They have been recognized for their commitment to community and their vision for change. They have worked with people of all ages, faiths, and cultures from homeless shelters to universities. In each place they remain focused on the belief that creative expression can be an important vehicle for transformation. Past performances include: The National Storytelling Festival, and The National Association of Black Storytellers.

Are you looking for a storyteller to share stories from the African American experience? You've come to the right place! ASE members tell at schools, festivals, museums, libraries, colleges, and at special events all over Chicagoland. Many are also available for programs throughout the United States.
ASE Storytellers have chosen to advertise on this site. They have stated that the information on their pages is accurate and true. They further acknowledge that they are independent contractors and are not necessarily representatives of ASE. The exception to this would be if an authorized ASE officer secures a group performance contract.
