With the vibrant sounds of drums, Ase: The Chicago Association of Black Storytellers, welcomes all to our "Black is...!” This will be a fun virtual event for the family.

Ase’s Annual Concerts have been graciously hosted for several years at the University of Chicago’s Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts. This year, however, all will be welcomed to enjoy the concert from the comfort and safety of your homes (there is no fee for this concert). Donations, however, will be gratefully appreciated and can be made here.

In this concert, there will be stories told by storytelling legends folk tales by Ase members, and engaging music. Highlights will include powerful performances by:

Velma Gladney

Dolores "Ms Dee" Gordon

"Firekeeper" Hawkins

Patricia Redd

Dhamana Shauri

Hosted by:

Omiyale Du Part

For more than 20 years, Ase has provided concerts and performances in various Chicago land venues throughout the year. They have been highlighted at the African Festival of the Arts, the Soulful Chicago Book Fair, eta Creative Arts Foundation, the DuSable Museum of African American History and more.

Ase members provide performances across the country and around the world. Guests of Ase’s concerts have said:

  • “I never knew before that storytelling could be done like that! I’ll come back every year!”
  • “I felt like that story was told just for me!”
